Evolving by deleting: patterns of molecular evolution of Apple stem pitting virus isolates from Poland

2019

In this study, 267 coat protein gene (CP) sequences from 48 Polish isolates of Apple stem pitting virus (ASPV) were determined. The genetic structure of the virus population was analysed and possible mechanisms of molecular evolution explored. We found evidence of recombination within the ASPV population and the presence of 17 ASPV molecular variants that differ in the length, number and arrangement of deletions in the CP. Population genetic analyses showed significant variation among isolates from pear and apple trees, between isolates from the same host species and, more interestingly, within isolates, supporting the existence of significant levels of variability within individual hosts, …

Influence of the microstructure and laser shock processing (LSP) on the corrosion behaviour of the AA2050-T8 aluminium alloy

2011

International audience; The corrosion behaviour of AA2050-T8 was studied after polishing and after laser shock processing (LSP) treatment using the electrochemical microcell technique and the SVET. After polishing, pitting at constituent particles and intergranular corrosion were observed. By contrast, no intergranular corrosion developed after LSP. Microcell measurements revealed that LSP increases the pitting potential. SVET measurements revealed that local anodic currents are systematically lower on LSP-treated surfaces than on polished ones. The current density on the LSP-treated surface remains constant around 50 μA cm−2 up to 123 min after immersion, while on the polished surface it r…

Semiconductor electrochemistry approach to passivity and passivity breakdown of metals and metallic alloys

2004

AbstractA critical appraisal of the use of the theory of semiconductors in characterising passive films on metals and alloys is provided, with special emphasis on the use of Mott-Schottky theory for the location of characteristic energy levels of the passive film-electrolyte junction. Some inconsistencies between theory and experimental results in the case of thin passive films are discussed together with possible alternative ways for overcoming such problems. The role of semiconducting properties in determining the pitting behaviour of passive films on W in solutions containing halide is presented and discussed. The validity of a recently proposed correlation between the solid state proper…

Shear and flexural strength of corroded R.C. beams

2016

Simplified equations aimed at evaluating the flexural and shear capacity of corroded R.C. beams are presented and discussed in this paper, with reference to ordinary beams reinforced both longitudinally (with same-size bars) and transversely (with stirrups). A model is developed to take care of diffused and localised corrosion (pitting corrosion), concrete decay in compression and bond-strength decay at concrete-reinforcement interface. A fairly innovative contribution of this study is the introduction into the proposed equations of the main parameters governing the corrosion processes. The proposed approach is simple and effective, and may be adopted in the assessment of many damaged struc…
